Usbourne That's Not My Flamingo Book & Soft Toy From Rainbow Designs - Review

AD - I was sent these product for the purpose of this review.

Books played an important part in my childhood. I have many fond memories, all revolving around books. I have vivid memories of my Mum reading me stories, over and over, it's all I ever wanted to do. I remember learning to read and being able to read the stories to myself. I also dabbled in writing short stories in school too. Books have always meant a lot to me and I always wanted them to mean something to my children too, so they can reap the many benefits. Thankfully, they do and both of them have adored books from a very young age.

'That’s not my…' books are a favourite of theirs, a range that is enjoyed by youngsters of all ages. There are over 50 books in the collection, some of which we already own, including; That’s Not My frog, truck, unicorn, witch, lamb, pirate and many more. I like to keep a lookout for new releases from the range, to add to our collection so I was delighted to get our hands on That's not my Flamingo gift set. As you can see, Ava was too!

The story starts on the cover, following through to double pages, made from sturdy board. Just like the rest of the stories from the series the tiny mouse in the book is looking for someone, in particular, this time, his flamingo! Designed with tots in mind they are not only are colourful, bright and engaging but they are robust and hard-wearing, perfect for little hands. The touchy-feely parts in the story are fantastic for their senses and tend to be my children's favourite part.

Just when you think it can't get any better, Rainbow Designs release a range of That's not my... soft toys to accompany the books! We, of course, received the flamingo plush with the book and it's so lovely. It's just like the illustration, a great size and it's super soft and cuddly too. Ava really enjoys looking through the book with the flamingo in the crook of her arm. It's like the story has come to life!

That's not my... soft toys cost £9.99 each, the books, £6.99 each and the full range can be seen on the Rainbow Designs website. I'm currently giving away this set over on Instagram. You'll have to enter quickly as it won't be open for long. Good luck!

  3. Books can be a great way to share time, and interact with a child. They can get so, so much from books. So giving them the opportunity from a young age is a good thing. Book bug, Book Trust, libraries, etc all encourage and support reading to / with children from a young age. Can encourage socialisation also, as helps improve communication.

  6. Ava doesn't look comfortable to me, in the photo with a soft toy fabric material in her mouth. Neither would I feel comfortable with a fluffy piece of material in my mouth. Is she perhaps :- Still teething??

  7. Books / storytelling, etc can be a great way of providing a quieting down time : - Perhaps prior to nap time or bed time. Child knows / gets to know Parent /s, Carer in a calm, nurturing, enjoyable / entertaining time. Not exciting, adventurous / active. But just matter of fact I'm here willing to spend time :- Just with you, and in no rush to go anywhere. Gives the child a sense of comfort / security. Can ask questions , give comments about book / story, etc. A Valuable, quietly interactive quiet, calming time. Bliss! Restful. We all need quiet restful periods of time.

Athletes warm up, do exercise activity, then cool down. An active body and mind needs to relax, become peaceful, rest, recuperate, sleep, zzzzz.

I had no idea there are now soft toys available to go with the books. I will have a look at them and add a few to my Christmas shopping list for our youngest, who also loves being read to.

  14. Wondering if Ava will start attending Nursery School this year. As Nursery School attendance can be a great opportunity for youngsters to have books read to them, become familiar and comfortable with books, enjoy books, etc.

  15. Seeing the book :- Pink Flamingo, and egg. Reminded me of years ago when family members have bred birds. It is Wonderful to see the young. Their growth and development. The variety in colours of the birds. I do love to hear birds chirping. It is their way of communicating. Outdoors hearing birds chirping is so, so nice. A reminder that life is continuing. Life goes on. It sounds to me as if the birds are chirping quite happily amongst their family and friends :- Sociable.

  16. Recent visit to a library I came across a leaflet :- It was encouraging 11 - 25 year olds to volunteer at library. To provide assistance / supports in regards to computers, coding, Lego building group, and / or Bookbug.

Seems a great idea. Intergenerational. Perhaps volunteers could assist at chatty table/ s at library. As at times people chat to staff at reception desk, and they can be heard by those at computers nearby :- Trying to concentrate on research, etc.

Libraries can be a place to learn. Also a place for building community / communities, though socialisation.

  19. Books can be great for all ages. I can recall years ago when there was a mobile library within our community. Such a service can be great. As with children, not always easy to get outdoors. Yet means that the family can still get some access to books. Also with the older generation :- Helps to keep them connected with their community. Even though their health and mobility may be on the decline, some socialisation, feeling integrated (part of ) their community can boost their spirit / sense of self - worth, self esteem, etc.

Such a service probably helped to reduce Risk of Depression :- Postnatally. Elderly. Reduced the Risk of Social Isolation.

Maybe with technology :- Skype, Face - Time. Opportunity to communicate with library staff. Set up Book Club, etc.
